So you’ve finally decided to create a Squidoo Lens on a topic that is near and dear to your heart.

Just like most of the top content managemenet system, like Joomla, Drupal, phpBB, etc. you’ve been searching for templates to make creating your Squidoo Lens easier.

Easier!?!?!

Are you kidding?

For now, there are no templates for Squidoo that I’m aware of and even if there were, there don’t appear to be any way to import them into the Squidoo system. There is an Squidoo Lens XML Export option in the Squidoo Lens editor but no import.

Regardless, lack of a template system is part of the Squidoo Lens magic. Because of the consistancy of creation, Squidoo is very easily spidered and indexed by the search engines like Google. In fact, Google loves Squidoo so much that you will likely see a Squidoo lens or two in the top 20 results for virtually any topic. Checkout two of the Warcraft Riches Lenses on Google. That’s an easy example and if you start searching, you’ll find many, many more.

Getting back to templates for Squidoo Lenses…

There seems to be little need for templates for the initial creation of a Squidoo lens.

I think that people searching for Squidoo templates are actually searching for the magic formula to create a lens that people will be attracted too and want to visit and come back too. Also, one that Google will index.

There is a package called Ultimate Squidoo that has lens clipart, articles and instructions on how to create, manage and promote Squidoo Lenses. That is probably more inline with what people that are looking for “Squidoo Lens Templates” are looking for.

This is a lens type that I've developed to work with my BANS sites. I wanted to create lenses that would essentially be mini-reviews of individual BANS store pages in order to provide some deep-linking.

This is the module order I came up with:

1. Link List - Link to Bans page and product info pages for that item
2. Ebay- Current listings for that item (set to different price levels so I don't cannibalize listings)
3. Blog Search - Reviews of the item (could use RSS feed instead)
4. Text/Write - Affiliate links and product descriptions for accessories or other items that go well with the product

Is there such a thing? I’ve been researching Squidoo for sometime now and I have found various schools of thought on the subject.

It used to be that you used the YouTube module, the Flickr module and some text and you would get decent juice. Since the Google Slap in July, more is needed now.

I have found that, just like everything else with Google, that you need good content with good keyword placement in your content to get the juice. Nothing new there.

So what is the best Squidoo Lens template?

Seems as if 3+ text modules definitely helps. Remember that images with good image names also play a role in getting good SEO. That applies to Squidoo as much as it would a “normal” webpage. Adding images to your Squidoo lens is very easy. You can just used the upload option that will put a simple image thumbnail to the top right of your module or you can use the HTML available and embed an image link. Remember to use the “title” and “alt” attributes on all your images and give them descriptive names. “aw0004a.jpg” just isn’t going to cut it when you are trying to make a good lens that get’s lots of traffic.

Rename your image from “aw0004a.jpg” to “adwords-miracle-guide.jpg”.

Another good module to add to your Squidoo Lens template is a guestbook. Why a guestbook? Because it’s a great way to get feedback and also potentially backlinks from like minded Squidoo Lens owners. It’s likely that other Lensmasters in your category will be looking for other lens on their topic and because it’s such a friendly, helpful community, they will fillout your guestbook. Bam! A backlink that is related to your topic! Helps both of you.

There probably is no definitive Squidoo Lens template, but if you spent the time to provide good content, optimize your content to focus on your keywords and optimize your images, chances are very good you’ll get traffic and Google love.

1. Head on over to Squid Utils and log in using your lensmaster ID.

4. Click ‘Copy Link Location‘

This is an easy commerce lens module layout and uses the following modules in order:

1. eBay (Content Paragraph before items)
2. Poll
3. Wikipedia
4. YouTube Plexo (Full Videos Only)
5. Amazon
6. Google Blog Search (or RSS)
7. Guestbook

This lens can be completed in about half an hour for any product. It entices users to get comfortable clicking on things (with the poll and video) and offers a variety of products for them to take a look at.
